ABOUT US

Blue Heron - The Story

The Blue Heron is unique. Established in the 1940's and one of a handful of waterfront holiday parks in Northland, the Blue Heron has been a part of New Zealand holidays for generations.

Named for the Blue Herons who nest in the 200-year-old pohutukawa trees , the park sits on a private peninsula at Tamaterau on the shores of the Whangarei Harbour. It is a nature lovers' haven with abundant bird and marine life.

Set in native, subtropical bush, our boutique size and standards ensure your holiday, conference, or special event will be magical.

Relax in one of our waterfront or waterview sites, caravans, cabins or self-contained holiday homes. Want to get out on the water? It surrounds you - fish from the shore or launch your boat from our boat ramp or the one adjacent. The Pines Golf Course is only a two-minute drive away for eighteen holes, take a five-minute stroll down the beach for a game of tennis, or take a short ride to a selection of white sandy coastal beaches, surfing and bushwalks.

A homey waterview communal kitchen, our unique waters' edge Barbecue House, clean, comfortable shower and toilet facilities and our very own beach.

The Blue Heron is a destination.

Whangarei Heads

Named for the looming pinnacles of Mt Manaia, the Heads is the popular name for the peninsula on the northern side of the Whangarei Harbour. It has a unique beauty and rare peace. So much to see and do so close to the Blue Heron — why go further?

Whangarei

Only fifteen minutes away is Whangarei, New Zealand's northernmost city, enjoying 2000 hours of sunshine a year. A vibrant city only two hours from Auckland, it enjoys a sub-tropical climate and unforgettable scenery. The Town Basin is the heart, with its cafes, galleries, shops and museums. It has an international feel, with boats and yachties from every port tied up. Don't miss the AH Reed Kauri Park with its treetop walkway giving a good view of its ancient giants, the Whangarei Falls as they tumble over a basalt lava flow, and the Bird Recovery Center and Kiwi House at Heritage Park.

Northland

Extending from north of Auckland at Wellsford to the tip of the North Island at Cape Reinga, the winterless north has it all - surf beaches and sheltered bays, still forests and windswept islands, historic towns and the birthplace of the nation, and every water sport imaginable including world-class diving. Northland can be all things to all people.
